Of very heavy silver, naturalistically formed to resemble a wooden basket from a fruit vendor, stamped Tiffany and Made in Portugal.
Van Day Truex (1904-1979) was an American designer, professor of design and painter. He first taught in Paris, then returned to the US at the start of WWII to become the President of Parson’s School of Design. In 1955 he was chosen by Walter Hoving, the new President of Tiffany & Co., as the director of design for the company. He is perhaps most famous for creating Tiffany’s bamboo-style flatware.
