The crest and coronet are those of Fitzgerald, under a Marquess’ coronet, probably for James, created in 1761 Marquess of Kildare and in 1766 Duke of Leinster, 1722-1773, who married in 1747 Emilia Mary, daughter of Charles, 2nd Duke of Richmond and Lennox. The family seat Carton, co. Kildare designed by Richard Castle (Cassels) 1690-1751 with alterations by Morrison in 1820 is considered the largest in Ireland. It is now a hotel and two golf courses. The Dublin townhouse, Leinster House, also designed by Castle is now the Irish Parliament. Its design was used by architect James Hoban for some aspects of The White House in Washington DC.

An identical inkstand, made in Dublin in 1817 to match this example, is in the National Museum of Ireland.
