This shape is well known from fully hallmarked London examples of the later Commonwealth period. It is likely, therefore, that this piece is amongst Cory's earlier works and could be dated to circa 1665. Thomas Cory served his apprenticeship in London to Edward Wade for 9 years!! He was admitted to the Freedom of the Goldsmiths Company in February 1655 and it was some time after this that he moved to Warminster. We know his son Humphrey was baptized in Warminster in 1662 suggesting that Cory was established in that Town, had dwellings and was into family life. It is generally assumed that the provinces copied London styles within a few years. This is why we have dated the cup to Circa 1665 in line with most of Timothy Kent’s attributions about Cory and Warminster silver.

Timothy Kent, Silver Society Journal, No. 10, p. 23 & 24 illustrates a beaker (c. 1665) with the same Cory mark as this cup, and also illustrates a wine cup with pricked date 1669.
