Underside stamped ’TIFFANY & C0 STERLING SILVER,’ pattern number 8523 (used in 18850), order number 580.

The style and technique of the enamel on this clock is reminiscent of the decoration on Tiffany’s 'Orchid Vase,’ the company’s most important showpiece in silver at the 1889 Paris Exposition. That vase, some 27 inches high, had been designed by Edward C. Moore, with the probable collaboration of John T. Curran. Its remarkable decoration was composed of shallow acid etched 'Moorish’ arabesques, with pendants of matte enamel orchids and foliage at the shoulders in the same palette as this clock.
