This rare pair of baroque toilet boxes are possibly the earliest surviving example. They would have originally belonged to a toilet service. In Michael Clayton's "Collector's Dictionary", he describes a toilet service of 1675 as one of the earliest. We are not aware of any earlier.

The same monogram is noted on a pair of wall sconces at Burghley House c. 1670.

Once in a fitted case c. 1890 as part of a partial toilet service with brass plaque engraved CAROLINE OFFLEY SHORE.

Provenance:
Caroline Perry Sinnickson (1870-1957) of Philadelphia, who in 1908 married Offley Bohun S.F. Shore of Norton Hall, Derbyshire.
Then by descent until the partial toilet service was sold at Christie's, New York, 15 April 1997, lot 343 to S.J. Phillips
