Of oval form, the wide rim decorated with foliage, engraved at center with a cypher below an Earl's coronet within crossed plumage.
The cypher is that of Catherine, wife of the 6th Earl of Thanet, daughter of the 2nd Duke of Newcastle. She married Thomas Tufton, the 6th Earl of Thanet on 14th August 1684, probably at Welbeck Abbey.
The mark on this piece has recently been confirmed to be that of John Cooqus. It is recorded in Jackson as GC, but is in fact IGC conjoined, and in cypher. Jackson’s reference for the mark is this item “an oval dish [in the possession of] Mrs. Chrichton.”
