The large tapering bowl has a rounded bottom and is pricked beneath the lip with initials NT within stylized scrolling tendrils and two stars.

The utter plainness of this cup is shared by most others from the second quarter of the seventeenth century. Nevertheless this example is unusual in two respects: its bowl is very large relative to the overall size of the piece and I know of no parallel for its curious triple-knopped stem (most of this date have a more conventional baluster stem). The cup is in very unworn condition and the hallmarks are exceptionally clear.

David Mitchell identifies Walter Furler (free 1604, died 1632) as the only probable candidate for this maker's mark.
