These rare, small jugs are of particular interest or, perhaps, fall between two stools. They were made by William Hughes, a Dublin goldsmith who emigrated to Baltimore, MD in 1785. They are awfully small to be Irish, and the alloy is not sterling but aligns more with American silver (this according to Winterthur). So: are they Irish, or American? If Irish, they contravene the hallmarking laws. If American, they are the rarest things around. The problem is: we will never know.
