A large, rare, early epergne, of which very few survive. Comparable examples are the Dysart Epergne by Paul Crespin (private collection) the Brobinsky Centerpiece by Paul de Lamerie (State Hermitage Museum, Moscow) and the Russborough epergne (Colonial Williamsburg Foundation).
The arms are of John Hope, 2nd Earl of Hopetoun, of Hope House, Queensferry, Linlithgow who succeeded to the title in 1742. He married three times, firstly in 1733, Anne youngest daughter of James Ogilvy, Earl of Findlateer (d.1759), then Jean, daughter of Robert Oliphant of Rossie, Perth (d.1767) and lastly, Elizabeth of Alexander Leslie, 5th Earl of Leven (d.1788). He was a Lord of Police, Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and a Fellow of the Royal Society.
