Engraved with contemporary prick dot initials ‘HW KH’. The initials suggest that this may have been a marriage piece.

The maker’s mark ‘HN with a bird and branch below’ has recently been identified as the mark of Henry Noyes by David Mitchell in “Silversmiths in Elizabethan and Stuart London; Their Lives and Their Marks”, pp. 328-9. Noyes was regularly involved with the affairs of the Goldsmiths’ Company, including a number of Mayoral Feasts, and the Committee for a New Charter in 1660. He was clearly quite successful, having had a number of apprentices, and, based on his extant work, specialized in the production of cups and porringers.

The remarkable and sophisticated handles on this porringer are reminiscent of those produced by another of the great early 17-century English goldsmiths, the artist formally known as the Hound Sejant maker, Richard Blackwell.
