A fine pair of canns by a notable silversmith of the Revolutionary period. Daniel Van Voorhis was a New York-born silversmith who served under General Washington. He worked for some years in Philadelphia and in Princeton, but most of his active years were spent in New York.

The initials on these canns may ascribed to an unknown member of the Brinkerhoff family, because one of them was purchased from a family descendant.
