An extremely attractive George I tankard, among the best examples of this very fetching form. Its maker, Phillip Rollos II, like his father, was one of the leading goldsmiths in London. Both father and son were Subordinate Goldsmiths to the Crown. They were long thought to be French Huguenots, but they were in fact Lutherans, and the elder Rollos had immigrated from Berlin. Nicely engraved with script initials in a mirror cypher.
