The arms are those of Byam impaling Eaglesfield for Edward Byam (1661-1741). The Byams were Royalists and after the execution of Charles I settled in the West Indies were they are recorded as Governors of Barbados.
Edward Byam was born in Suriname, the youngest son of William Byam, a Lieutenant General, and Dorothy Knollys, granddaughter of the Earl of Banbury. In 1707 he was made president of Council of Antigo, and in 1715 was appointed Governor of the Leeward Islands and Lieutenant Governor of Antigua, an office he occupied until his death. His first wife was Mary, daughter of Samuel Winthrop and granddaughter of John Winthrop, Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Edward was described as a “man of the best head and fortune in British America” and commanded a regiment he raised himself in Antigua in the attack on Guadaloupe during the reign of Queen Anne.
