The border is engraved with a coat of arms and Earl’s coronet, fully marked on back and stamped Garrard's Panton Street London.
The arms are those of Stanhope for George, 6th Earl of Chesterfield (1805-1866). He succeeded to the Earldom at the age of ten in 1815, and served the King as Lord of the Bedchamber from 1828-30. He was a man of fashion and extravagance, commissioning an extensive silver service (including the present plates) for his twenty-first birthday in 1826. This service matched the earlier silver commissioned by his grandfather, 4th Earl, from David Willaume in 1726/7, which in turn had been made to augment the magnificent ambassadorial service the Earl had received from the Jewel House that same year.
The design of the border of these plates, with alternating faces of bearded men and winged angels, is most unusual and in exceptional condition.
Provenance: George, 6th Earl of Chesterfield (1805-1866)
