The famous Warwick vase was perhaps the most popular ancient Roman form adopted by English silversmiths during the Regency period. As explained in "The Gilbert Collection of Gold and Silver", pp. 406-9, "The original marble vase is five feet, ten inches high and almost certainly dates from about 120-35 AD. It was discovered in 1770 in a lake at the villa of the emperor Hadrian at Tivoli outside Rome by the Scottish painter Gavin Hamilton and was eventually acquired by George Greville, Earl of Warwick. It remained at Warwick Castle until its purchase in 1979 for the Burrell Collection in Glasgow. Beginning around 1811 numerous ...copies of the vase [in silver were made], based on Piranesi's prints and mainly with Paul Storr's mark.
