The arms are those of Batchelor quartering another and impaling Pettus for Leonard Batchelor, Esq. (1703-1757), and his wife Mary Pettus. Leonard was a successful lawyer; he entered Middle Temple in 1722 and later bought Griston Hall at Horstead, Norfolk. His wife Mary was the daughter of Sir Horatio Pettus (1672-1731), 4th Baronet, of Rackheath Hall, Norfolk. The Pettus family were wealthy, having had helped found the East India Company, but suffered for suing with the Royalists during the Civil War.
