A beautifully plain George III tea caddy.
The arms are for Rowland Wingfield (1728-1818), Esq. of Preston Brockhurst, and his wife Mary (1739-1813). Rowland was High Sheriff of Shropshire in the 1750s and purchased Onslow Park in 1780. He commissioned designs for a new house from George Steuart, the Gaelic-speaking neoclassicist who worked in and around Shrewsbury, but construction never started. His son John finally had the house rebuilt in a Greek manner in the early 19th century. That house was torn down in the 1950s, but has recently been elegantly rebuilt in the Neoclassic style by Craig Hamilton, the noted contemporary architect, and remains in the Wingfield family.
