Description

Engraved on one side CEM.

Provenance:
Marshall family of Philadelphia, sold Christie's New York, January 20-21, 1989, lot 288

In 1989 this pitcher accompanied a very similar four-piece tea set by Lownes (lot 289) with the initials of Elizabeth Flower Marshall and presumably made for her marriage in 1806. Probably the initials on this pitcher are those of her parents, Christopher Marshall and his wife Elizabeth Flower, married in 1777. Elizabeth died in 1781, suggesting that this was engraved in commemoration for her daughter, who inherited a considerable fortune from her late mother.
