Description

18K gold, of plain oval form, mounted with a ceramic cameo of King George III under glass, engraved on the back "The Gift of H. M. G III to Dr. Beattie bequeathed by him to Robert Arbuthnot Esqr 1803"

Dr. James Beattie (1735-1803), Scottish poet and writer on philosophy, was the Professor of Moral Philosophy at Marischal College, Aberdeen, from 1760 to 1797. Best known for his "Essay on Truth" and the poem "The Minstrel," he received an audience with George III in 1773 and was awarded a pension of 200 yearly for his achievements. He was likely given this cameo ring at that meeting. On his death, Beattie bequeathed this ring to his life-long friend Robert Arbuthnot, an Aberdeen merchant, who had originally proposed Beattie's professorship. The inscription was probably added at that time.
