Description

A very rare eighteenth-century cross.<br /><br />

14K openwork gold, set with six step-cut Columbian emeralds (approximately 7.20ct total weight).<br /><br />

Provenance: Charles Pratt (1714-1794), 1st Earl Camden, given to his daughter and thence by direct descent to the recent owner. Charles Pratt was an English lawyer, judge and Whig politician. He was a leading proponent of civil liberties, championing the rights of the jury, and limiting the powers of the State. He held the offices of Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, Attorney-General and Lord Chancellor, and was a confidant ofÊPitt the Elder, supporting Pitt in the controversies over John Wilkes and American independence. A clever politician, he managed to stay in the cabinet for fifteen years and under five different prime ministers.
