Description

A Rhyton is a drinking cup, usually in the shape of an animal's head, used for libations or dining. They were produced throughout the ancient world, particularly in Persia and the Mediterranean, starting in the 2nd millennium BC.

In the 19th century, archaeological discoveries across the Mediterranean inspired the creation of revivalist objects, jewelry, and decorative arts, including rhyton cups. While this category is relatively common in English and European creations from the period, it's comparatively rare to find American examples like this one by the Gorham firm in Rhode Island.
