Japanese design was an extremely strong influence in Europe during the late 19th century, appearing everywhere from Impressionist pictures to Industrial design. On this claret jug, the flecked gold decoration, muted colors, raised linear designs and prunus motifs are all derived from Satsuma wares being imported directly from Japan. The silver mounts were clearly designed and decorated specifically for this ceramic body.
