A Rare George III Antique Irish Silver Coffee Pot with Figural Engraving
This handsome coffeepot, in perfect condition, with great proportions, is distinguished by the beautiful and unusual engraving on two sides: one of a family at tea (with a coffeepot of similar design on the table) and the other with a chinaman holding an umbrella. Efforts to trace these scenes to particular paintings or engravings have been unproductiveäóîunless you consider piles of tendentious name-checking a product. My belief is that this type of engraving was rare, but not unheard of in the period. One can find it in simpler form on tea caddies and pots of the period, and in more elaborate form on the remarkable teapot at the Clark Art Institute, a piece we sold to them in 1963.
