SOLD - A Rare Early American Silver Teaspoon
Peter Bentzon (c. 1783-1850) was the only free black silversmith working in the US. before the civil war. He learned his craft as an apprentice in Philadelphia from 1799 to 1806 (or 1791 to 1798) and lived and worked on both the island of St. Croix (1806-16 and 1829-48) and in Philadelphia. His hallmarks P. BENTZON and PB have been found on only a handful of pieces of silver spanning the years 1815 to 1841.
