A Pair of Diamond & Ruby Cufflinks
Description
Each formed by two platinum-topped oval discs joined by a clip link, each disc ornamented with an applied crown of diamonds, calibré-cut rubies and a cresent and star finial, marked "18ct" on each disc and "750" on the connector, in the original box from Zivy Freres & Co. of Paris, Alexandria & Cairo.
The crown is of King Farouk (1920-1965), last King of Egypt, who ruled from 1936 until he was forced to abdicate in 1952. Egypt became a republic in 1953.
Even in exile Farouk was known for his lavish lifestyle, acquisitiveness, and love of fine cuisine. He collapsed and died after a heavy meal at the age of 45.
The actor David Suchet, who played detective Hercule Poirot, modeled the character's mustache on Farouk's.
